Since the demise of the Santa Ana Fire Department and the Santa Ana Benevolent Association, the care, funding and upkeep of the Memorial Stones at station 5 and station 4 has been assumed by SARFA. Without our support, funding and input, there is not and will not be any entity willing to keep the Memorial Stones up to date, repaired and replaced (as in adding additional new stones).
To be clear, SARFA does not hold title to the Memorial Stones. The Historical Society of Santa Ana has control of all aspects regarding adding names, removal of the stones, and any additional new stones being installed. We have been working and will continue to work closely with the Historical Society Committee on all counts. However, they are not willing to disburse funds to place deceased firefighter names on the stones or to assist with the cost of new stones.
In the past six months we have added nine new names to the existing stones at station 5 with the funds we held from donations to the Memorial Fund. This fund is now depleted and new sources for funding will be a top priority.
It is in this light that the Board of Directors of SARFA has made the determination that a fee for the placement of names on the Memorial Stones must be set for future deceased members and retirees.
The fee schedule is as follows:
Retired dues paying members in good standing for two years will not be required to pay the fee for placement of the deceased firefighter’s name on the Memorial Stones.
Retirees (non-members) whose family wishes to have their name placed on a stone will pay a current fee of $125.00.
Retirees for whom it may be a hardship to pay the fee may contact a board member in writing stating the hardship and the board of directors will make a determination on covering the fee for the family.
Santa Ana Firefighters / Orange County Fire Authority: There will be a fee of $250.00 for each name installed.
Please contact any member of the Board of Directors or Wayne Smith with any questions you may have regarding this matter.
